The Kenya Revenue Authority has unveiled a new tool for the public to verify the identity of KRA staff to prevent extortion and impersonation.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In a notice on Friday, May 22, KRA stated that the move followed public uproar over complaints that fraudsters were impersonating KRA officials and extorting money from them.
The authority said scammers have been posing as KRA employees and attempting to solicit money by falsely promising assistance in tax and procurement-related processes.
“It has come to our attention that fraudsters are impersonating KRA staff and attempting to solicit money from taxpayers and suppliers,” KRA said in the statement.
📌 What You Need to Know
The authority stressed that its procurement processes are conducted transparently and in accordance with the law, adding that no individual officer can influence tenders or tax procedures.
“KRA procurement processes are transparent , lawful and cannot be influenced by any individual officer,” the authority stated.
Following a rise in fraud cases, the authority unveiled a tool for the public to verify whether a person posing as KRA staff is genuine.
KRA introduced several verification channels, including an online Staff Checker platform available through its official website.
The public can visit the website directly at kra.go.ke/imposter-detection , where they will be asked for their identification number and phone number to verify whether the person is an employee of the tax agency.
KRA further urged taxpayers and suppliers to remain vigilant and avoid sending money or personal information to individuals claiming to be officials without proper verification.
