The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) says it will commence its nationwide teachers' strike on August 14, unless the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) promotes the remaining 16,000 of the 50,000 teachers promised by President William Ruto.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The union issued the seven-day ultimatum on Thursday, August 6, warning that the commission's failure to honour the President's pledge would trigger industrial action just days before the start of the third school term.
KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori accused the commission of failing to implement Ruto’s directive to promote 50,000 teachers, saying only 34,000 promotion vacancies have been advertised.
"The Commission's failure to advertise the exact number which the president himself had pronounced, 50,000 vacancies which he mandated on September 13, 2025. If TSC does not do justice to this, then they are calling back industrial action," said Misori.
📌 What You Need to Know
KUPPET National Chairperson Omboko Milemba said the commission's actions had raised concerns among teachers, especially after promotions had remained stalled for nearly a decade before the President intervened.
"Remember, initially, promotions for teachers had been halted for about 10 years. But when the president tells TSC to recruit over 50,000 teachers, now they are only advertising 34,000 teachers, that clearly indicates something," Milemba said.
If the ultimatum expires without action, the strike is expected to commence on Friday, August 14, 2026, barely 10 days before learners return for the third term.
The strike is likely to disrupt the final school term, which begins on Monday, August 24, 2026, and runs until Friday, October 23, 2026, before the national examinations start.
The strike notice comes just a week after TSC announced one of its largest recruitment drives this year, advertising 54,016 teaching vacancies.
The vacancies, announced on July 28, included 34,016 promotion opportunities for serving teachers and 20,000 posts for post-primary teachers to serve in Junior Schools.
