The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has explained the delay in the completion of the Kenyatta Avenue-Upper Hill viaduct project amid growing public concern over prolonged construction works and traffic disruptions in Nairobi CBD.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
While acknowledging the delay, KURA said the project has taken longer than expected to be completed due to the complexity of structural works required for the flyover.
According to the authority, installation of columns and steel components is very complex and requires precision engineering and phased execution.
"Setting up of the columns and steel works is a bit involving but we are working round the clock to complete the works...it is our hope to complete and open to traffic within the shortest time possible. Kindly be patient," KURA stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
According to KURA, the nature of viaduct construction involves multiple stages, including foundation works, column erection, and steel beam installation, all of which must meet strict safety and design standards before progression to the next phase.
Works are ongoing and being carried out in phases to minimize disruption to road users while ensuring structural integrity and safety compliance, as explained by the authority.
The construction of the viaduct began in September 2020. Still, it was delayed for years due to payment disputes with contractors before work resumed in July 2025.
According to President William Ruto, the multi-billion project will be completed in December 2026 , and motorists will start using it before the end of the year.
Once operational, the viaduct will ease traffic congestion in one of Nairobi's busiest commercial corridors and improve access to the Central Business District (CBD).
The Kenyatta Avenue viaduct is part of broader infrastructure works, including the Valley Road–Kenyatta Avenue/Ngong/Nyerere Interchange, as well as the Upper Hill–Haile Selassie Overpass projects.
