Landowners in West Pokot and Turkana counties have been put on notice after the National Land Commission (NLC) announced plans to acquire land for the Ksh24.4 billion Kitale-Morpus highway project.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a notice obtained by Kenyans.co.ke and dated June 19, 2026, NLC announced plans to acquire 5.2 acres of land for the two-lane highway stretching 75 kilometres.

The Commission amended an earlier land acquisition notice by adding new parcels, removing others, and correcting ownership records to facilitate the road expansion.

The newly added parcels are West Pokot/Morpus GR/36 (2.42 acres), West Pokot/Morpus GR/55 (1.17 acres), West Pokot/Chepararia/658 (0.24 acres), and West Pokot/Morpus Group Ranch (1.36 acres).

📌 What You Need to Know

Meanwhile, the Commission removed West Pokot/Morpus GR/853 (2.18 acres) and West Pokot/Chepararia/558 (0.24 acres) from the list of lands set for acquisition.

"NLC plans to acquire a parcel of land on behalf of Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) for the construction of the Kenya-South Sudan Road Link-Kitale-Morpus Road Upgrading of Kitale-Morpus in Trans Nzoia County," the notice read in part.

Affected landowners have been invited to inspect plans of the affected land at Ardhi House in Nairobi and at the County Coordinator’s offices in Trans Nzoia County.

The project forms a key section of the Eldoret-Kitale-Lodwar-Nadapal-Juba corridor, a major international transport route connecting Tanzania, Kenya, and South Sudan.

Implemented by KeNHA and funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the road project covers about 60 kilometres in West Pokot County and 15 kilometres in Turkana County.

The project is currently in its first phase, which includes the 55-kilometre Lesseru-Kitale road, the 54-kilometre Morpus-Kainuk road, and the 75-kilometre Kainuk-Lokichar road.
