🌐 Here's What Happened

South African swimmer Chad le Clos says he "would love" to stand alone as the most decorated male athlete in the history of the Commonwealth Games.

The 34-year-old's current haul of 18 medals - comprising seven golds, four silvers and seven bronzes - puts him level in the all-time list with shooters Phil Adams of Australia and Mick Gault of England.

Durban-born Le Clos, who made his Commonwealth Games debut in Delhi in 2010, is set to be on the blocks for the men's 50m and 100m butterfly events in Glasgow.

📌 Key Details

"It's been a weird monkey on my back the last eight years," he told Sportsworld on the BBC World Service.

"I should have got that title back in 2018. I should have got over the line with an extra medal or two."

Le Clos picked up one silver medal, in the 200m butterfly, at the 2022 Games in Birmingham to tie the record but revealed afterwards that his preparations had been affected by mental health issues.

Is 2026 the Commonwealth Games' last dance or a future-proofing revamp?

"Birmingham was a guarantee for me, in some respects, with the way I was looking. But life happened and we got fourth [two] times, and unfortunately we didn't make that final relay," he said.

"I still feel like there's a lot of fight left in me and I still believe I have a part to play in world swimming.
