Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina is asking the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to reconsider the directive ordering public officers to resign from their respective roles by February 9, 2027.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Ledama argued that requiring public officers to leave office prematurely unfairly punishes individuals who may eventually lose elections despite having constitutional political rights.
“Public officers seeking elective office should not be required to resign prematurely. While the Constitution guarantees political rights, it also requires public officers to uphold neutrality, integrity, and public confidence in office,” Ledama stated.
According to Ledama, a more balanced approach would allow public officers to remain in their positions until they are successfully elected, after which they can formally resign from public service.
📌 What You Need to Know
The debate over public officers and electoral processes resurfaced again on Wednesday, June 24, during the launch of the Election Operation Plan 2025–2027, when IEBC Commissioner Ann Nderitu directed all public officers intending to vie for elective seats to resign by February 9, 2027, in line with existing electoral laws.
Nderitu, who chairs the Election Operation Committee, also instructed political parties to conclude party primaries and resolve all internal disputes by May 9, 2027, as the commission moves to streamline preparations ahead of the next General Election.
The commission further stated that individuals intending to contest as independent candidates must formally cease being members of any registered political party by May 9, 2027, in accordance with electoral regulations governing independent candidature.
The IEBC also announced that the nomination exercise for both political party candidates and independent aspirants will be conducted between May 29 and June 11, 2027, during which all candidates will be required to submit their nomination papers and relevant documents to the Commission for clearance ahead of the General Election.
Ledama’s remarks came months later when acting IEBC CEO, Ledama Sunkuli, faced mounting pressure over concerns surrounding the integrity of the voter registration process, with some leaders calling for his resignation.
In a press statement issued on April 2, 2026, former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi demanded that Sunkuli step down over alleged irregularities involving voter registration records.
