Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang'i has raised alarm over the government's alleged involvement in internet jamming and mass surveillance of opposition leaders, warning that the state has escalated its crackdown into what he termed digital terrorism.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
While speaking during a presser at Jubilee Party Headquarters in Kileleshwa on August 17, Nairobi County, the former Interior CS stated that the government has acquired resources from criminal networks abroad, including in Indonesia, to gain access to social media accounts belonging to opposition figures.
He claimed that opposition convoys are frequently trailed by unmarked vehicles believed to belong to the state, fitted with signal jammers that cripple communication during political events.
“ The government has decided to begin, in addition to terrorizing opposition leaders, if you did not know, and some of my staffers are here, they will tell you that a new wave of digital terrorism against the opposition,” Matiang’i stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
“They have acquired resources from some criminal groups in Indonesia, and they are accessing social media accounts of opposition leaders.”
Matiang'i further alleged that whenever opposition leaders stop to address rallies, their Wi-Fi connections mysteriously go down, cutting them off from the outside world.
He revealed that the team of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua reportedly experienced similar disruptions while on the campaign trail over the weekend in Nakuru and Kiambu County, a phenomenon that he describes as a coordinated pattern.
He also accused the state of pouring huge sums of money into propaganda and disinformation campaigns aimed squarely at thwarting the opposition figures' efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Matiangi also took the opportunity to address the fabricated letter that has been making rounds all over social media over the past week that falsely attributed to Kanze Dena, former President Uhuru Kenyatta's communications chief, claiming Kenyatta had refused to meet Gachagua, which, he stressed, was a fake letter, which had all the writings of the state.
He argued that such schemes prove the government is more preoccupied with sabotaging its rivals than solving the country's pressing problems.
