Mau Mau war veterans have sent a demand to President William Ruto, calling on his administration to strengthen security and restore public confidence following a series of high-profile killings across the country.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The veterans want the government to intensify efforts to combat criminal gangs and individuals involved in violent crimes, while ensuring that those behind killings are identified, arrested and prosecuted.
They cited the recent killings of psychologist and researcher Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso and former Chesikake councillor and businessman Nathan Wasama as examples of the growing insecurity they say requires urgent government intervention.
The veterans also called on Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to step up security operations and improve the response to violent crime.
📌 What You Need to Know
They said the killing of people who freely express their views could create fear among Kenyans and discourage them from openly sharing their opinions and beliefs.
“When someone has the right of expression, and they are killed, it creates fear for them to even share their ideologies. This is not something to do to Kenyans,” one of the veterans said.
Dr Mutiso was fatally shot in Nairobi's Upper Hill in an incident detectives are treating as a planned attack. Investigators are pursuing a Toyota Prado believed to have blocked the taxi she was boarding shortly before gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire.
Police believe Dr Mutiso was shot three times, with detectives also examining a possible link between the Prado and a vehicle reportedly stolen during an earlier demolition of her property in Mlolongo, Machakos County.
The veterans also pointed to the killing of Wasama, who was shot dead by two gunmen at his home in Mount Elgon. He had reportedly expressed interest in contesting the Mount Elgon parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election and had survived an earlier shooting in 2024.
His killing has renewed concerns among residents over insecurity in the Mount Elgon region, including fears of a possible return of the Sabaot Land Defence Force militia and politically linked violence.
