Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has officially appointed former Cabinet Secretary Adan Abdulla Mohamed as the new Commissioner General of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), effective May 18, 2026.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
This appointment was confirmed through a special gazette notice obtained by Kenyans.co.ke on May 19.
“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 11 (1) of the Kenya Revenue Authority Act, the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury appoints-
ADAN ABDULLA MOHAMED to be the Commissioner General of Kenya Revenue Authority, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 18th May,” stated the notice.
📌 What You Need to Know
Mohamed takes over from Humphrey Wattanga, who has led the tax agency since 2023 and is being considered for the role of Australian High Commissioner following his tenure at KRA.
The appointment is for a three-year term, placing Mohamed at the helm of the primary tax collection body, which is tasked with mobilising domestic revenue to fund government operations and public services.
Mohammed has an array of experience ranging from different aspects in the finance and economics world, qualities that would prove vital in the tax body.
Before stepping into government, Mohamed built his career in international finance, including a notable stint at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in London, where he worked within Management Consultancy and Business Advisory Services.
He later moved into banking, spending over a decade as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Barclays Bank of Kenya, the institution now rebranded as Absa Bank Kenya.
His banking influence stretched well beyond Kenya. Mohamed rose to become Managing Director for Barclays East and West Africa, then Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for Barclays Africa, overseeing operations across ten countries.
