The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has reduced electricity prices for the June 2026 cycle, offering relief to Kenyans.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a statement by Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi on Wednesday, June 10, the ministry announced that electricity prices will fall by Ksh0.2685 per kilowatt-hour, effective June 2026.

According to Wandayi, the reduction is attributed to a combination of increased hydropower generation, a drop in the forex adjustment component, and lower fuel energy costs used in power production.

"Effective June 2026, electricity costs have reduced by Ksh0.2685 per kWh," Wandayi stated.

📌 What You Need to Know

"This reduction is driven by a significant drop in the Forex Adjustment component, a decrease in the Fuel Energy Cost (FEC) and increased hydropower generation," he added.

The CS framed the move as part of efforts to cushion both households and industries from high energy costs, which have been a key concern for the public in recent weeks.

The decision followed a high-level stakeholder meeting between the ministry and the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM), which raised concerns over high electricity bills.

The reduction provides relief to many households that have recently complained about being charged more for electricity, especially in April and May.

It is worth noting that in May, the energy and petroleum regulatory authority increased electricity prices by Ksh1.10 per kilowatt-hour.

According to EPRA, the increase was driven by total exchange losses incurred by power producers, which reached Ksh1.17 billion in April 2026.
