The Ministry of Health has clarified the implementation of the 2026 Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) Standards, assuring pharmaceutical technologists that they can continue practising within the scope allowed by the law.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

This clarification was made during a consultative meeting between the Ministry of Health, the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB), and the Kenya Pharmaceutical Association (KPA), which was chaired by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale.

According to the stakeholders, these new standards do not prevent qualified and licensed pharmaceutical technologists from providing pharmaceutical services.

Moreover, the technologists will continue to practice within the responsibilities and services permitted under existing laws and regulations.

📌 What You Need to Know

Based on what was discussed in the meeting, licensed pharmaceutical technologists can superintend Level 3B facilities, meaning they can remain responsible for the professional running of these facilities within this category.

This comes days after the Pharmacy Society of Kenya (PSK) called for stricter rules for pharmacies in Kenya after several products were found to be fake.

The society wanted pharmacies to obtain the necessary approval directly from the board, with officials raising concerns that some outlets could be operating under county permits without the required pharmaceutical checks.

The Ministry of Health, however, clarified that existing facilities will not be required to close or change their status within three months.

Instead, compliance will be determined based on the category of each facility, the level of risk involved, and the applicable professional superintendence requirements.

This clarification has provided a much more practical approach to implementing the 2026 GPP standards, which are intended to guide the quality, safety, and accountability of pharmaceutical services.
