The Ministry of ICT and Digital Economy has issued fresh updates on the construction of the multibillion-dollar digital media city at the Konza Technopolis, announcing that the project is set to enter the design phase.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Speaking during an event in the statehouse on Monday, June 29, ICT and Digital Economy Principal Secretary John Tanui announced that preparations for the project had progressed, with designs expected to begin soon.
According to the PS, the hub, co-funded with a loan from South Korea, will be the largest creative hub on the African continent, providing infrastructure that will enable Kenya's creative industry to expand its contribution to the economy.
"We are setting up a Digital Media City project with your support and negotiations to help us get support from Korea. We are soon starting the designs of the Digital Media City, which will provide ready platforms for our creative sector," Tanui stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
"This will be the biggest centre on the continent and will help our creatives to do much more than what's happening at the moment," he added.
Tanui also revealed that the facility will occupy 160 acres in Konza City and will include, among other things, multimedia academies, state-of-the-art post-production, and digital innovation.
"Projects like the Konza Digital Media City (DMC) are designed to provide a world-class 160-acre hub for multimedia academies, state-of-the-art post-production, and digital innovation. By bridging the gap between talent and global media outlets, we are positioning our youth as world leaders in services export. The future is creative," the PS said.
The PS maintains that the government remains committed to building a thriving ecosystem for Kenya's creative industry through the Konza Digital Media City.
The latest announcement comes two years after Kenya secured Ksh30.8 billion for the facility from South Korea.
The funding agreement, signed by Korea Exim Bank officials and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in June 2024, aimed to transform Konza Technopolis into a cutting-edge hub for film and creative industries.
