Moi University has moved to reassure students, parents and staff that it is steadily recovering after months of financial turmoil that saw the institution grapple with massive debts, fears of an auction, frozen bank accounts and growing concerns over its future.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In a statement issued on Friday, July 3, the university said it remains fully operational and continues to deliver on its academic mandate, insisting that teaching, examinations and graduation schedules have not been disrupted despite the financial challenges it has faced.
“Moi University wishes to give our students, staff, parents and the wider public an unequivocal assurance that the University is open, fully functional, and continues to deliver on its academic mandate,” the University said in a statement signed by its VC Professor Kiplagat Kotut.
The statement came a day after the university's management appeared before the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Education to explain its financial position and outline reforms being implemented to restore the institution's stability.
📌 What You Need to Know
According to the university, the financial difficulties have accumulated over several years and prompted intervention by the government.
It said a comprehensive recovery plan, backed by the Ministry of Education, the University Council and management, is beginning to yield positive results.
Moi University told lawmakers that reforms, including strengthened financial management, enhanced revenue mobilisation, prudent expenditure controls and administrative changes, have helped reduce its revenue deficit while placing the institution on a recovery path.
As part of the assurance, the university said teaching and learning are proceeding as scheduled across all its campuses, and the academic calendar has been fully restored.
Additionally, it noted that examinations are continuing as planned and graduation ceremonies are taking place on schedule.
On fears of staff missing their salaries, Moi University has assured that they are being paid on time as it eyes a return to restore financial stability.
