Samir Suleiman Shahbal, the son of Mombasa County tycoon and politician Suleiman Shahbal, has taken up the leadership of The New Democrats Party under an interim position.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The move was announced through a Gazette Notice dated September 18, which outlined a major reshuffle of the party’s officials.
Samir replaces David K. Sudi, who had been serving as Party Leader, while Sudi has now been moved to the position of Deputy Party Leader in charge of the party.
The notice was issued under Section 20 (1) (c) of the Political Parties Act, and members of the public have seven days to submit any written concerns to the Registrar.
📌 What You Need to Know
Samir is not entirely new to politics. In June, Siaya Governor James Orengo announced that Samir had officially joined his political and technical team.
At the time, Orengo pointed to Samir's technical expertise and his deep roots in Mombasa, describing him as a major stakeholder in the county and the wider Coast region.
Away from politics, Samir works closely on his family's real estate ventures, including the Buxton Point housing project in Mombasa.
Samir's appointment comes just days after his father, EALA MP Suleiman Shahbal, publicly rejected President William Ruto's advice to stay out of the 2027 Mombasa governor race.
“Let me tell you in no uncertain terms: come 2027, whether they like it or not, there will be no retreat. There will be no turning back. We will face off at the ballot box on August 10, 2027,” Shahbal stated.
Speaking at State House on September 8, President Ruto revealed he had asked Shahbal to focus on business, arguing that Kenya needs serious industrialists to drive growth and create jobs.
