Motorists were forced to spend hours stranded in freezing conditions along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway after a major traffic snarl-up brought the busy route to a standstill on Friday night.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Some drivers said they remained stuck in traffic for more than six hours as the gridlock stretched for several kilometres, paralysing movement along one of the country’s busiest transport corridors.
“We have slept in traffic for over six hours,” motorist Dela Comedian said in a video shared online, capturing the scale of the disruption.
The traffic jam is reported to have begun around 10pm near Gilgil after a road accident involving a truck near Naivasha.
📌 What You Need to Know
The collision caused a partial blockage before escalating into a full-scale standstill as vehicles piled up in both directions.
Emergency responders and police were deployed to the scene to manage the situation and clear the wreckage, although movement remained severely restricted for hours.
Travellers reported confusion and growing frustration as the night wore on, with some taking to social media to seek answers about the cause of the paralysis along the highway.
Transport companies were also forced to alert passengers to expected delays.
“Esteemed customers, due to a heavy traffic snarl along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway, expect delays of arrivals and departures. Parcel collection will also be affected,” said Team Swat Sacco in a notice to customers.
By early morning, traffic remained heavily disrupted as clearance efforts continued, with authorities yet to issue a full update on when normal flow would resume.
