Traffic was brought to a standstill along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru Highway on Thursday afternoon after a road accident involving two lorries and two matatus occurred at the Kijabe-Kimende section.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Preliminary reports indicate that the crash happened after one of the lorries reportedly lost a front tyre, causing confusion on the road and triggering a collision involving two matatus.

The accident left tens of motorists stranded as long queues of vehicles built up on both sides of the highway, one of Kenya's busiest transport corridors linking Nairobi to Nakuru and western Kenya.

P olice officers quickly arrived at the scene to manage traffic and coordinate efforts to clear the wreckage from the road as vehicles remained stuck for more than three hours.

📌 What You Need to Know

The police are yet to confirm the number of people injured or whether there were any fatalities, with rescue efforts and assessments continuing at the scene.

Images seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed a massive traffic snarl-up stretching along the highway, with lorries, buses, matatus and private vehicles unable to move as emergency responders worked to restore normal traffic flow.

Motorists travelling along the route have been advised to exercise caution, follow police directions and expect delays as clearance operations continue.

The Kijabe-Kimende stretch has long been considered one of the country's accident-prone sections due to its steep terrain, sharp bends and heavy traffic, particularly involving long-distance trucks.

Investigations into the exact cause of the accident are expected to begin once the scene has been cleared.

The Kijabe-Kimende accident came just hours after another major traffic disruption was reported along Nairobi's Southern Bypass following a fatal crash involving a speeding lorry.
