Police on Thursday morning barricaded key entry points into Nairobi and blocked several major highways, disrupting transport and leaving thousands of commuters stranded as nationwide demonstrations marking the second anniversary of the Gen Z protests got underway.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Roadblocks were mounted along sections of Mombasa Road, Thika Road and Lang’ata Road, while routes linking Nairobi to Athi River and Mlolongo were also affected as security agencies intensified operations across the capital.

The restrictions significantly disrupted public transport services, with many matatus unable to access the Nairobi Central Business District during the morning rush hour.

A spot check by Kenyans.co.ke along Haile Selassie Avenue showed unusually low traffic volumes, with only a few motorists and public service vehicles accessing the city centre amid the heightened security deployment.

📌 What You Need to Know

On Thika Superhighway, police have mounted several roadblocks at Ruiru, Bypass, Allsops and Roysambu.

Kenyans.co.ke has also learned that police in Ongata Rongai have mounted several roadblocks at the Tumaini area and Maasai Lodge, essentially blocking residents from leaving the area for the capital.

The closures come despite the government insisting today, June 25 would be a normal working day.

The disruptions forced commuters to seek alternative means of transport, with many stranded at various stages after public service vehicles were grounded.

Along Outering Road, some passengers were seen boarding lorries and trucks in a bid to reach their workplaces after being unable to secure matatus heading into the city.

The transport challenges were also reported along sections of Waiyaki Way after police mounted a roadblock at 87 Junction, blocking motorists traveling to Limuru toward  Nairobi.
