Motorists using the Mai Mahiu escarpment are facing long delays on Sunday after a heavy crane operation blocked part of the busy Naivasha-Narok Highway.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Images obtained by Kenyans.co.ke show two mobile cranes, one marked “Wide Load”, stationed on the carriageway from about 9 am, with a boom extended over the roadside barrier towards the valley below.

Workers and onlookers were also seen gathered along the guardrail as the operation continued.

The positioning of the cranes left limited room for passing vehicles, causing a traffic gridlock along the stretch, a key route linking Nairobi to Naivasha and western Kenya, as vehicles queued to squeeze past the site.

📌 What You Need to Know

The exact purpose of the crane operation had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting.

Motorists are advised to expect delays, follow instructions from traffic officers on site and consider alternative routes where possible until the road is fully reopened.

Motorists heading to Nakuru and Western Kenya can use the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway through Rironi and Flyover, provided the disruption remains confined to the lower Mai Mahiu escarpment.

Drivers seeking to bypass congestion along both the Naivasha and Mai Mahiu corridors can use the Flyover-Njabini-Ol Kalou-Dundori-Lanet-Nakuru route.

Motorists can also use the Thika-Magumu-Njabini-Ol Kalou-Dundori-Lanet-Nakuru route, while those travelling further west can connect through Nairobi-Nyeri-Nyahururu-Nakuru.

Travellers heading to Narok, Kisii and Maasai Mara can use the Ngong-Kibiko-Suswa route , connecting to the Narok-Mai Mahiu Highway beyond the affected section, or travel through Mau Narok-Njoro-Nakuru.
