Motorists travelling along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway were on Tuesday left stranded for hours after a broken-down trailer triggered a massive traffic snarl-up between Kiboko and Masimba towns in Makueni County.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The disruption, which began in the early hours of the morning, saw traffic build up over several kilometres, with some motorists reporting that they had remained stuck on the road for more than eight hours without significant movement.

The scale of the congestion forced major bus operators, including Tahmeed Coach and Mash Poa, to issue travel advisories warning passengers of delays affecting both arrivals and departures on several routes.

In a notice to customers and seen by Kenyans.co.ke , Tahmeed said delays would affect both passengers and parcel deliveries travelling between Nairobi, Mombasa, and various upcountry destinations due to the traffic gridlock at Kiboko.

📌 What You Need to Know

The company noted that routes linking Mombasa with Nairobi, Kitale, Malaba, Busia, Kakamega, Kisumu, Nakuru, Kagio, Kitui, and Mtwapa were among those expected to experience disruptions.

Mash Poa also warned customers that buses travelling between Nairobi and Mombasa would arrive later than scheduled, adding that some upcountry departures from Mombasa could also be delayed.

According to reports from the area, the traffic jam was caused by a trailer that broke down and blocked one side of the busy highway, significantly slowing movement along one of Kenya's most important transport corridors.

Some motorists have opted to use the Wote-Makindu Road as an alternative route in a bid to bypass the congestion, while others have remained trapped in the queue awaiting clearance of the obstruction.

"The situation at Kiboko is very bad. There is a gridlock from Kiboko all the way to Salama. It began at around 4am, and since then, I have been stuck here with no movement at all. If you have not entered the gridlock, kindly reconsider your travel plans," one stranded driver narrated.

By Tuesday morning, travellers continued to report little movement along sections of the highway, raising concerns about further delays for passenger vehicles and cargo transporters.
