Nyeri and Malindi are set to start offering passport registration services after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced plans to establish passport registration centres in the two towns.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a statement after a high-level meeting with the Directorate of Immigration Services on Tuesday, October 6, Murkomen said the Malindi and Nyeri passport registration offices were steadily coming up.

According to the CS, the move is part of the government's course to decentralise passport issuance and ensure the public can access the travel document without necessarily having to travel to Nairobi.

Currently, the decentralisation programme has seen passport centres established in Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Kericho, Embu, Bungoma, Kisii, Nakuru, and Garissa.

📌 What You Need to Know

"We are well on course with the decentralisation of passport issuance, bringing this crucial document closer to where citizens live," Murkomen stated.

" We currently have regional passport offices in Mombasa , Kisumu, Eldoret, Kericho, Embu, Bungoma, Kisii, Nakuru, and Garissa, with Malindi and Nyeri coming up," he added.

The Nyeri and Malindi offices currently offer immigration services; however, full passport processing and biometric capture are being redirected to the Nairobi offices.

Murkomen said the offices will be levelled up and equipped to offer full services, including biometric capture, just like other offices.

Besides the new offices, the Tuesday meeting also discussed ways to fast-track passenger processing at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) .

According to the CS, the government is continuing with the installation of electronic gates (E-gates) at the airport to facilitate faster passenger processing.
