Uganda's Chief of Defense Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has announced his intentions to vie for the presidency in 2031, potentially succeeding his father, President Yoweri Museveni.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The announcement was made by David Kabanda, General Muhoozi's aide, who is also the Head of the Chairman's Office of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).
Speaking during a meeting on Tuesday, September 1, Kabanda said he had been sent by Muhoozi to deliver the declaration, describing the presidential bid as a significant development in Uganda's political landscape. "I am here once again to inform you that General Kainerugaba has informed me that he is going to run for the president of uganda," Kabanda announced to PLU officials.
According to Kabanda, Muhoozi's declaration to seek the presidency in 2031 has been formally sanctioned by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. "I must tell you that this one has been sanctioned by His Excellency the President," he added.
📌 What You Need to Know
He said PLU will immediately embark on supporting members to carry out orderly endorsement rallies in 146 districts of Uganda to secure the required signatures and ensure Gen Muhoozi wins the 2031 presidential election by 90 per cent.
The announcement comes days after Muhoozi hinted at his intention to seek Uganda's highest office in the 2031 elections, a development that has already generated significant political interest and discussion within Uganda and Africa at large.
Muhoozi currently serves as Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces and chairs the Patriotic League of Uganda.
He has remained at the centre of discussion within Uganda regarding the presidency, given that Museveni hinted at not seeking another term in office.
During the 2026 campaigns, Museveni called on opposition leader Bobi Wine to support his bid, and in return, he would personally campaign for the musician turned politician in 2031.
With the announcement made official and campaigns expected to begin in January 2027, Muhoozi now seeks to succeed his fathe r, who has been the president since 1986.
