Nairobi City Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced the temporary waiver of the application and approval processing fees for minor building repairs.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a statement on Wednesday, September 23, Sakaja said the move is to allow Nairobi residents to intensify repairs of their homes and compounds ahead of the anticipated El Niño rains.

According to the Governor, the waiver will remain in effect until the onset of the anticipated El Niño rains, allowing Nairobi residents to install gutters and undertake other minor repairs to protect their homes from heavy rains.

"As Nairobi prepares for the anticipated El Niño rains, I have waived the application and approval processes for minor building repairs until the onset of the rains," Sakaja stated.

📌 What You Need to Know

"This will allow Nairobians to put up gutters and undertake minor repairs to their homes and compounds without the usual approvals," he added.

Usually, obtaining a minor building repair or renovation permit in Nairobi costs between Ksh4,000 and Ksh10,000 , depending on the nature of the repairs.

The waiver, therefore, gives homeowners in Nairobi the opportunity to undertake necessary measures to prepare themselves adequately before the anticipated long rains beginning in October.

Nairobi has been one of the most hit areas by flooding during periods of heavy rainfall, with several parts of the city, including residential areas, experiencing waterlogging, damaged infrastructure and disruptions to transport and businesses.

The county government has, in recent years, intensified efforts to address flooding by clearing drainage systems, desilting waterways and opening up drainage corridors in flood-prone areas.

The latest measures, according to Sakaja, are aimed at ensuring residents have adequate time to prepare their homes and compounds before the anticipated rains.
