A Nairobi man who posed as a Nairobi City County enforcement officer to extort money from a motorist has been convicted by the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court over a bribery scheme targeting owners of impounded motorcycles.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The man was sentenced on Thursday, July 9, after the court found him guilty of four counts of receiving bribes and one count of impersonation following investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

According to the EACC, he falsely claimed to be an enforcement officer attached to the Nairobi City County Inspectorate Department and convinced a complainant that he could facilitate the release of an impounded motorcycle.

The anti-graft agency said the accused used the false identity to mislead the motorist into paying him money in exchange for the purported service.

📌 What You Need to Know

The court found that he had no authority to act on behalf of the county government and had deliberately misrepresented himself to obtain financial benefit from the complainant.

Following the conviction, the court imposed a cumulative fine of Ksh237,000, with him set to serve a one-year jail term if he fails to pay the amount.

"The ruling reflects the Commission's continued efforts in the fight against corruption," the EACC said after the judgment.

The conviction came just hours after the EACC hosted a high-level delegation from China's Shaanxi Provincial Supervisory Commission to strengthen collaboration in combating corruption and promoting integrity in public institutions.

During the meeting, EACC Chairperson David Oginde said the commission was keen to learn from China's experience in preventing and combating corruption through knowledge sharing and the exchange of best practices .

The Chinese delegation, led by Director General Wang Xingning, said corruption continues to evolve as perpetrators adapt to changing environments, calling on anti-corruption agencies to keep pace with emerging challenges.
