Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has revealed that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna will run for president on the United Democratic Party (UDP) ticket.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Speaking during an interview on a local radio station on Thursday, September 24, Natembeya sought to dispel speculation that Sifuna has no political vehicle amid reports of wrangles within the Linda Mwananchi Movement.
According to the governor, Sifuna will use former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo's UDP after the registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) rejected the party's call to change its name to Ukombozi People's Party (UPP).
"We have a party. And it's called the United Democratic Party (UDP). It is the party Sifuna will use," Natembeya stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
UDP failed to change its name to UPP after Azimio La Umoja changed its name to The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA) , with the registrar saying the names are similar and will cause confusion.
However, Natembeya revealed that with the party in place, Sifuna will now negotiate with the wider opposition to come up with a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Elections.
The wider opposition includes the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), PLP and the now rebranded Ukombozi Alliance.
The announcement comes even as the Nairobi senator prepares to announce his party after reports that he was left partyless.
According to sources close to Sifuna, he will launch his party on October 3 , a few days before the ORPP deadline of October 15.
The move would give Sifuna a formal political vehicle as opposition parties continue discussions on how to coordinate their campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.
