The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has condemned the acts of violence witnessed in Homa Bay on Sunday during the Linda Mwananchi rally.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a statement on Sunday, August 16, NCIC raised alarm over political violence and intolerance witnessed in Homa Bay County, warning that such incidents threaten constitutional freedoms and national cohesion.

Reacting to the recent events in Homa Bay, the commission condemned what it described as political intolerance and acts of violence in the county.

NCIC Chairman Bishop Kefa Nyamweya said the incidents were unfortunate and represented a worrying trend that goes against the Constitution of Kenya and the National Cohesion and Integration Act.

📌 What You Need to Know

"The National Cohesion and Integration Commission condemns the political intolerance and acts of violence witnessed in Homa Bay County. This is unfortunate and a worrying trend that goes against the Constitution of Kenya as well as the National Cohesion and Integration Act. Such actions raise serious security concerns regarding the protection of constitutional freedoms.

The statement comes after the Linda Mwananchi team, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, was faced with goons when they toured the county.

The leaders were attacked, their vehicles destroyed, and roads barricaded by a rival group reportedly supporting the government.

Large stones were placed across sections of the Nyandiwa road and other routes leading into and out of the area in the early hours, with some sections rendered impassable to motorists as tensions mounted ahead of the rally.

Videos circulating on Sunday morning showed several access points blocked, while Linda Mwananchi supporters raised concerns over attempts to prevent them from accessing the Nyandiwa rally venue.

At Kendu Junction in Oyugis, Homa Bay County, tyres were also reportedly set on fire as groups opposed to the Linda Mwananchi tour took to the streets, further raising tensions in the county.
