Importers will no longer need to rely on NEMA officers to manually opt in their KRA PINs when applying for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) permits, following a new automation of the process.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), in collaboration with the Kenya Trade Network Agency (KenTrade), announced that the new system will take effect on Monday, September 28, 2026.

Under the new arrangement, importers will be able to opt in their Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) PINs directly through the Trade Facilitation Platform (TFP), also known as the Single Window System.

The change will apply to the PIN opting process required when making applications for NEMA EPR permits.

📌 What You Need to Know

NEMA and KenTrade said the automated system will eliminate the need for officers to manually process the PIN opt-in, allowing applications to proceed electronically.

“This enhancement is intended to result in fast, seamless and efficient EPR application and processing, 24/7 service availability, elimination of manual intervention, enhanced user experience and improved operational efficiency,” the two agencies stated.

Under the new system, the PIN opting process will be handled through the Trade Facilitation Platform, meaning importers will no longer need a NEMA officer to manually process the request .

The change will apply to the PIN opt-in stage of EPR certificate applications, with the automated process available through the platform from September 28.

The development comes months after NEMA introduced a requirement for importers to obtain EPR import certificates before their goods enter Kenya.

In March 2026, NEMA directed all importers bringing goods into the country to obtain an EPR Import Certificate through the National Electronic Single Window System.
