Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has revealed that funding has been secured for all five planned Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines as the city advances a wider mass transit system aimed at tackling persistent traffic congestion.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Speaking during an interview on Radio Citizen on Wednesday, Sakaja said the BRT network will form part of an integrated mass transit system that will also include commuter trains and an underground railway.
“Nairobi has a great challenge when it comes to the issue of traffic jams. That is why we are progressing with the mass transit system plans, which also features trains. In addition to that, we will have the BRT, which is set to have five lines,” Sakaja said.
The Governor confirmed that part of Line 3, which will connect Dandora to Ngong, has been approved for financing by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the French Development Agency for Ksh11.16 billion (€74 million).
📌 What You Need to Know
“We have found the money for the BRT programme. Line 3 from Dandora to Ngong has been okayed by the European Investment Bank, which is Ksh11.16 billion (€74 million) together with the French Development Agency. We also have Line 1, but the bottom line is they have all been funded,” he said.
However, earlier planning documents reviewed by Kenyans.co.ke indicate that Line 3 was designed as a longer corridor running from Tala through Njiru, Dandora and the Nairobi CBD before extending to Showground and Ngong.
It was not immediately clear whether the latest funding announcement covers only the Dandora-Ngong section of the planned corridor or whether the Tala-Njiru section remains part of Line 3 under a separate phase or financing arrangement.
The five planned BRT corridors will cover major routes across Nairobi and its outskirts. Line 1, Ndovu, will run from Limuru through Kangemi and the CBD to Imara Daima, Athi River and Kitengela, while Line 2, Simba, will link Rongai to the CBD, Ruiru, Thika and Kenol.
Line 3, Chui, will link Tala through Njiru, Dandora and the CBD to Showground and Ngong, while Line 4, Kifaru, will run from Mama Lucy Hospital through Donholm, the CBD, T-Mall, Bomas and Karen to Kikuyu.
Line 5, Nyati, is planned to run along Outer Ring Road from Ridgeways through Balozi to Imara Daima.
