The National Land Commission (NLC) has announced plans to compulsorily acquire land for the realignment of the Homa Bay-Rongo (B3) road to pave the way for the expansion of Kabunde Airstrip, a move set to affect more than 100 land parcels.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a series of gazette notices dated Friday, July 17, the commission identified the parcels earmarked for acquisition on behalf of the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) as part of the road realignment project.

According to the commission, the road realignment is necessary to create space for the expansion of Kabunde Airstrip, with the land acquisition forming part of the infrastructure works.

"Notice is given that the National Land Commission intends to delete, correct and add parcels of land shown in the schedule hereunder on behalf of Kenya National Highways Authority, in accordance with section 110 of the Land Act No. 6 of 2012 and further to Kenya Gazette Notice No. 7325 of 2026, for the proposed realignment of Homa Bay-Rongo (B3) Road to allow for expansion of Kabunde Airstrip in Homa Bay County," the notice reads.

📌 What You Need to Know

The commission noted that it would conduct inquiries into the proposed acquisition to address issues relating to its legality, compensation, and other concerns raised by affected persons.

The first hearings are scheduled for August 3, 2026, at Kabunde Chief's Office, with additional sessions from August 4 to 6, followed by another hearing on August 7.

Affected landowners have been directed to appear before the commission and submit documents, including identification cards, KRA PIN certificates, ownership documents, and bank account details to support compensation claims.

"The National Land Commission calls upon persons who have an interest or claim in the land shown in the schedule here below, which the commission intends to acquire for purposes of the Proposed Realignment of Homa Bay compulsorily-Rongo (B3) Road, to appear before the commission in person on the date and place shown below to inquire into," NLC stated.

"For interested companies, deliver copies of certificate of incorporation, CR12, company's KRA PIN, copies of identity cards and Personal Identification Number for the Directors," the notice added.

The list includes residential, agricultural and institutional parcels, with several public and private institutions among those affected, including Tom Mboya University College, churches and other community facilities.
