The National Police Service (NPS) has announced that it is preparing to add 10,000 newly trained officers to its ranks as part of efforts to strengthen security ahead of the 2027 General Election.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The confirmation came during an oversight visit to the National Police Service Training College in Kiganjo, Nyeri County, on Friday, August 21, by the National Assembly Departmental Committee on National Administration and Internal Security.
According to Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lang’at, the recruits are expected to graduate from the college on August 28, marking their formal entry into the service.
He said the timing of the deployment is important as the country moves closer to the next election, when police will be required to manage heightened security demands.
📌 What You Need to Know
“The recruitment comes at a critical time as the country heads towards the 2027 elections, when increased security interventions will be required,” the DIG stated.
Lang’at explained that the additional personnel will help ease staffing pressures caused by years of limited recruitment and a decline in officer numbers.
Narok West MP and committee chair Gabriel Tongoyo disclosed that Parliament had been concerned about the staffing shortfall after the country went four years without a fresh police recruitment exercise .
The announcement comes days after the NPS held a high-level planning workshop with the Interior Ministry and other stakeholders to review its election security preparedness.
The August 19 workshop examined areas including public order management, policing technology, accountability, training, and coordination.
At Kiganjo, Lang’at said the service was also strengthening its response to firearms, criminal gangs and other security threats facing communities.
