Residents of Nyayo estate in Embakasi have announced a peaceful demonstration over an alleged grabbing of public land by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

According to the Nyayo Embakasi Residents Association (NERA),  the protest is scheduled on Friday, August 14, following concerns over the grabbing and allocation of open spaces, recreational areas and other community facilities.

As per the notice, residents had initially resolved to stage a demonstration on August 6, but the plans were disrupted after police allegedly arrested nine youths.

"Following a resolution reached during the Public BARAZA held at the NERA Grounds on August 2 2026, residents resolved to hold a peaceful demonstration on August 6 2026 to protest against the alleged grabbing and/or unlawful allocation of open spaces within Nyayo Estate Embakasi," the notice read in part.

📌 What You Need to Know

"On August 6 2026, a peaceful demonstration led by some of our youth was abruptly stopped by the police, resulting in the arrest of nine (9) youths. Through the intervention of NERA and other concerned residents, all nine youths were subsequently released unconditionally," it added.

The residents on Thursday, August 6, staged protests at the NSSF headquarters in the city, demanding answers over the alleged land grab.

According to the residents, a perimeter wall of the grabbed land was demolished almost two years ago, and recently, construction began without proper communication with the residents.

They alleged that they were denied entry to the piece of land when they tried to access it and see for themselves the kind of construction that was going on.

The residents demanded that NSSF restore the demolished perimeter wall and stop the ongoing construction, as well as provide enough security at the allegedly grabbed land.

Following the latest announcement, the association called on residents to turn up in large numbers, saying the demonstration is aimed at protecting and preserving open spaces, recreational areas, and other community facilities for current and future generations.
