The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has warned Kenyans about a scam involving fake driving licence charges circulating on social media.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The warning follows the circulation of a fake poster claiming to list official NTSA driving licence categories and fees.
“The Authority guides the public as follows: this poster is not associated with NTSA, and it is a scam. The Authority has not contracted any individual or organisation to serve as its agent,” NTSA stated.
According to NTSA’s official clarification seen by Kenyans.co.ke on September 9, a provisional driving licence costs Ksh650, far below the amount indicated in the fake poster.
📌 What You Need to Know
Test booking, the authority confirmed, costs Ksh1,050, while an interim driving licence costs Ksh750 under NTSA’s official rates.
A smart driving licence, which is issued after completing the process, costs Ksh3,050.
The fake poster, however, listed much higher charges, ranging from Ksh4,550 for motorcycle licences to Ksh10,000 for plant and machinery classes.
The difference between the official and fake charges shows how much unsuspecting applicants could lose through the scam.
For instance, the poster listed a basic automatic car licence at Ksh6,050 , compared to the much lower official charges.
The scam appears to target Kenyans who may not know the actual NTSA fees, directing them to middlemen claiming to fast-track licence applications.
