The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has identified Friday, Saturday and Sunday as the three most dangerous days on Kenyan roads, with most accidents recorded over the weekend.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

NTSA’s July 2026 Road Safety Status Report shows that the three days accounted for more than half of all road accidents recorded during the month, indicating that weekends are the most dangerous period to travel.

The Authority also identified the 7 pm to 9 pm period as a particularly high-risk time frame, with the single most dangerous hour being between 8 pm and 9 pm, when 37 fatalities were recorded in July 2026.

“Weekend travel remains a significant road safety challenge requiring enhanced enforcement and public education campaigns,” the Authority noted.

📌 What You Need to Know

The findings come amid an overall increase in road deaths and injuries, with total road traffic victims rising from 1,974 in July 2025 to 2,167 in July 2026, representing a 9.78 per cent increase.

Deaths alone rose by 11.36 per cent, from 396 to 441, while serious injuries increased from 958 to 1,006, and slight injuries also rose from 620 to 720 during the period under review.

“These trends point to the need for sustained, evidence-based road safety interventions focusing on pedestrian protection, motorcycle safety, commercial vehicle safety and speed management,” NTSA proposed.

The report further identified loss of control, hit-and-run accidents and speeding among the leading recorded causes of most road crashes in the country.

NTSA said the findings indicated the need for stronger speed management, improved driver behaviour and enforcement targeting high-risk driving practices.

Commercial vehicles and motorcycles were also identified as the vehicle categories most frequently associated with deadly crashes, prompting calls for inspections, driver and rider training and enforcement.
