The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended Nicco Movers 1 Sacco and ordered an immediate halt to all operations, citing safety concerns following the death of a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a notice issued on Friday, June 12, NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa directed that all vehicles operating under the Sacco cease operations with immediate effect.

“The Authority has resolved to revoke Nicco Movers 1 Sacco’s operator licence and to cease operation with immediate effect,” the notice stated.

NTSA further directed law enforcement officers to impound any vehicles belonging to the Sacco that will be found operating in defiance of the order.

📌 What You Need to Know

Nicco Movers 1 is a prominent matatu operator that manages a fleet of 33-seater and 46-seater minibuses operating along the Thika Superhighway. It mainly ferries commuters to and from Githurai, Kimbo, Juja, and Thika Town to Nairobi CBD.

The action follows a probe triggered by the death of Eugene Mutuku on Thursday, June 4, 2026, a 19-year-old KMTC medical student, in an incident involving a Nicco Sacco matatu.

According to preliminary accounts, Mutuku was allegedly assaulted and thrown from a moving vehicle following a fare dispute.

The matatu is said not to have stopped after the incident and instead ran over the student. He was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), where he succumbed to severe multiple body injuries and internal bleeding.

Following the incident, NTSA launched a deeper probe into the Sacco before taking any action and has found that officials and management have “lost control of the operation of their fleet and lack adequate safety protocols".

The Authority accuses the Sacco of not demonstrating any efforts to address major safety concerns. Already, two operations managers of the Sacco have been arrested and arraigned, charged with being accessories to a felony, concealing evidence, and aiding the escape of the fugitive matatu crew involved in the deadly incident.
