The Ministry of Transport on Thursday, August 27, said the government plans to establish five new automated driver testing units and automate the theory component of driver testing to improve efficiency.

At the same time, NTSA plans to establish five new vehicle inspection centres and upgrade five existing facilities as part of its medium-term priorities for the 2027/2028 to 2029/2030 financial years.

The ministry said the aforementioned measures will strengthen road safety by improving both driver testing and vehicle inspection services across the country.

📌 What You Need to Know

“Under the road safety plan for the medium term, we have prioritised the review of the Transport Act,” the Ministry of Transport said.

The planned reforms will also see the government promote implementation of the National Mobility Policy, alongside other measures aimed at improving the transport sector.

The ministry further disclosed that it had constructed model vehicle inspection centres at Thika in Kiambu and Likoni in Nairobi as part of efforts to improve vehicle inspection services.

It also said it had progressed the installation of four testing lanes to enhance driver testing and vehicle inspection.

“We have also operationalised commercial service vehicle regulations 2015, traffic motor vehicle inspection rules 2015 and traffic school transport rules 2015," the Ministry noted.

The Ministry of Transport said it is also developing a Smart Transport Policy and plans to introduce an automated fare collection system to make payments seamless across different modes of transport.
