NTV has distanced itself from the viral poster claiming Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna survived an assassination attempt along Mbagathi Road.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The media house dismissed the claims in a statement issued on September 2, describing the poster as fabricated and urging the public not to share it.
“ FAKE NEWS ALERT! Please be advised that this card doing rounds on social media is fake, ” NTV stated. The graphic obtained by Kenyans.co.ke , designed to look like an official NTV news card, quickly spread across social media platforms, catching the attention of thousands of Kenyans within hours.
It claimed the lawmaker had narrowly escaped death, with the card noting that details were still emerging at the time of publication.
📌 What You Need to Know
“ Edwin Sifuna reportedly escapes assassination attempt along Mbagathi Road, Nairobi. Details are still emerging,” the fake banner stated in part.
Complete with the station's branding, an SMS shortcode, and a deadline, the poster was convincing enough to misdirect many unsuspecting readers online.
Beyond the station’s denial, the Kenyans.co.ke fact-checking desk used digital forensic tools to assess the authenticity of the viral image.
This viral fake post comes at a time when the Linda Mwananchi movement has repeatedly accused the National Police Service (NPS) and National Intelligence Service (NIS) of complicity and failure to offer them and their supporters political mobilization rallies, alleging coordinated harassment rather than random unrest.
During the August 16 Homa Bay tour, leaders said the convoy encountered roadblocks, barricades, stone-throwing youths, and armed disruptions, calling it a premeditated ambush rather than spontaneous disorder linked to rival political factions, with multiple people killed, and scores injured.
Additionally, a similar incident was experienced during the initial phase of the faction's rally in Kitengela at the beginning of the year, which saw two people killed, and the convoy of the brigade almost destroyed.
