The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Bondo Diocese Bishop David Kobia has called on the leaders in the Nyanza region, especially the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Oburu Odinga, to convene an immediate meeting with other leaders from the region to address the rising cases of political violence.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Speaking to the media on Sunday, August 30, Kodia said the political class must urgently intervene to stop a trend of violence that has recently been witnessed in parts of Nyanza, warning that continued unrest could undermine public participation in democratic processes.
According to the Bishop, Oburu, as a leader in the region, should call on all leaders to order to stop the recent wave of political intolerance that has been witnessed in the region.
"When we started seeing this thing much earlier and called for sobriety, they took us for granted. most of them said hey were elected. Now look at the shame they have brought us. It is something which must stop ," Kodia stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
The bishop warned that the continued violence could have far-reaching consequences for the region, including discouraging residents from participating in elections and other democratic processes.
"They are the ones who planted this goonism. All of them, they are marshalling a very big following of goons who come and destroy and maim and leave a trail of destruction," he added.
Kodia called on ODM leader Oburu Odinga to take front action as the region's political leader and bring others together.
"I am calling on Oburu to call all MPs and tell them to reduce the violence. you must now show us that you are leader. lead these people and remove them from that mud of violence and let them talk to sort out their differences," the bishop told Oburu.
His call comes against the backdrop of violent incidents reported in parts of Nyanza in recent weeks , including Kisumu, Homa Bay, and Migori, during political gatherings linked to the Linda Mwananchi movement.
A day ago in Migori County , Siaya Governor James Orengo escaped an attempt on his life after his official vehicle was allegedly sprayed with bullets before being set on fire.
