United Oppositoon leaders are preparing to sign a pact committing to back a single presidential candidate in the 2027 general election to avoid division, Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has revealed.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on Sunday, June 21, Wamalwa said parties within the United Opposition have already formed a technical team tasked with drafting a document that will formalise the agreement.

According to the DAP-K party leader, the arrangement is aimed at ensuring unity within the opposing side and avoiding divisions that might occur when a single presidential government is announced to challenge President William Ruto in 2027.

"I want to assure the country we have already formed a technical team where all parties have seconded experts, and they are already working on what needs to be done in terms of documents we all need to sign to commit that if it is not me, then I will be able to support whoever is chosen," Wamalwa stated.

📌 What You Need to Know

He added that the same commitment would apply to all coalition partners, including the eventual flagbearer.

"If I happen to be given the honour to carry that flag, then I will expect the support of all my colleagues in the opposition, including those with us and those coming to join us," he added.

Wamalwa likened the emerging opposition movement to the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), whose united front ended KANU's four-decade hold on power in the 2002 General Election.

"All for one and one for all, that is the spirit that made us succeed in 2002, and those who are doubting us, I can tell them the 2002 NARC movement win will be the pathway come 2027," Wamalwa said.

His remarks come as all the principals in the opposition are pushing to be named the coalition's flagbearer, with the tensions seen as a possible wrangle in the opposition.

Principals, including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Artonney General Justin Muturi, Jubilee's Fred Matiang'i and also former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, are all pushing to be named the flagbearer, with the public foreseeing a possible fallout between them.
