The Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Human Rights Violations has approved 100 claims from uniformed officers seeking compensation for human rights violations suffered during the period covered by the reparations programme.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
According to a statement by Uwiano released on September 15, 2026, the claims had been received, verified, authenticated and categorised before being approved for compensation as part of the ongoing process.
The compensation for the uniformed officers comes alongside payments to civilians affected by fatalities, injuries, sexual violence, economic losses and other forms of recognised harm under the programme.
In total, the Panel said it had processed 1,083 claims across different victim categories, with compensation continuing on a rolling basis as individual claims complete the required verification process.
📌 What You Need to Know
The programme covers victims of human rights violations arising from demonstrations, public protests and related incidents, including fatalities, injuries, sexual violence and economic losses. The September 15 statement does not specify that all claims, including those involving the 100 uniformed officers, relate to the 2024 protests.
The Panel said it had also settled 139 claims relating to verified economic losses, particularly those suffered by small and informal business owners whose livelihoods were disrupted by demonstrations, public protests and related incidents.
The latest update also covers compensation under Phases IV and V, which comprise claims that have completed verification, authentication, categorisation and approval.
Under Phase IV, civilian claims included fatalities, severe, moderate and minor injuries as well as economic losses, with the approved awards amounting to Ksh74.35 million.
The same phase included claims by uniformed officers, with the Panel's figures showing Ksh6.2 million in approved compensation for that category.
Phase V includes further civilian and uniformed-officer claims, bringing the total compensation under the two latest phases to Ksh113.8 million.
