There was panic along the Nairobi Expressway on the evening of Sunday, August 23, after a vehicle caught fire near the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Terminal section.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Images obtained by Kenyans.co.ke on August 23 show the horrific incident, with bright yellow flames and black soot emanating from the vehicle's front end, commonly known as the bonnet, at a distance.
Additionally, in the footage obtained, motorists passing by and observing from afar are heard expressing concern and inquiring why an ambulance was not on site at the time of the incident.
It is also unclear what circumstances led to the car being engulfed in flames at the time of this story's publication, although witnesses claim the vehicle was speeding prior to the incident.
📌 What You Need to Know
The vehicle's doors also appear locked, with no visible sign of anyone inside or of whether they might have gotten out during the incident.
By the time of publication, however, firefighters had already arrived at the scene and were working to contain the blaze.
The incident occurred just hours after an old-model taxi burst into flames near Mountain Mall along Thika Road in Nairobi, at around 2:00 AM on Sunday, August 23, close to the mall's exit.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire initially erupted from the vehicle's boot area before spreading rapidly. Fortunately, no injuries have been confirmed as authorities continue to establish the cause of the blaze.
These, notwithstanding, are not isolated incidents, as the Nairobi Expressway has recorded two notable vehicle fire incidents this year, involving sudden mechanical failure and a high-speed collision, with response teams and local authorities managing both scenes amid temporary traffic disruptions.
On January 29, a Range Rover Vogue near the Southern Bypass caught fire due to a mechanical failure, and its occupants were evacuated safely. Months later, on May 31, a Mercedes-Benz erupted into flames near the Ole Sereni Interchange following a high-speed crash.
