🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

The National Police Service (NPS) said officers from Obama Police Station intercepted a motorcycle carrying two suspects along Kangundo Road during an intelligence-led operation.

A search of the motorcycle led to the recovery of suspected stolen vehicle parts, including a Toyota Harrier grille and a Toyota Harrier headlight.

Police said the recovered parts were marked with a vehicle registration number, giving investigators an important lead in tracing the rightful owner and helping establish how the theft was carried out.

📌 What You Need to Know

The arrests come amid growing concern over the rise in vehicle parts theft across Nairobi, where motorists have increasingly fallen victim to criminals targeting vehicles parked in public places or even those caught in traffic.

Headlights, grilles, side mirrors and vehicle emblems have become some of the most commonly stolen parts, leaving owners with expensive repair and replacement bills.

Police have in recent months stepped up intelligence-led operations targeting vehicle theft and vehicle-parts syndicates across Nairobi, leading to several arrests and the recovery of stolen vehicles, spare parts and tools allegedly used to dismantle them.

In August, detectives arrested a suspect believed to be linked to a car break-in syndicate operating around Sameer Business Park after an attempted escape. Investigators believe the group targeted locked vehicles using fake number plates and coordinated tactics.

Additionally, earlier in May, police also arrested two suspects over the theft of a Toyota Harrier grille from a United Nations vehicle in Parklands. Investigations pointed to a gang operating between Westlands and Parklands that allegedly stripped valuable vehicle parts within seconds before escaping.

Authorities say shopping malls, office parking lots, bank parking areas and busy roads have become common targets, with popular models such as the Toyota Harrier, Toyota Axio and other SUVs frequently targeted because of the high demand for their spare parts.
