The Deputy Inspector General (DIG)of Police has moved to calm growing public anger over gangs and goonism, unveiling a fresh strategy to end the menace once and for all.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

While speaking during a press interview on August 26, DIG Lagat said the National Police Service (NPS) was developing strategies to deal with individuals involved in criminal activities and to disrupt gang operations in Nairobi and countrywide at large.

“If you check lately, there is a great improvement,  and part of the thing that we are doing today is to lay strategies on how to finish these goons,” Lagat stated.

He said police had already arrested several suspects linked to criminal activity, and those apprehended were taken to court to face the law.

📌 What You Need to Know

Lagat noted that the security agencies were reviewing their approach to goonism as part of wider efforts to restore order and protect residents.

He said the police would continue working with other security stakeholders to strengthen interventions targeting criminal gangs operating within communities and public spaces.

The DIG assured Kenyans that authorities were committed to ending criminal gang activities, which he said had continued to affect the wider security environment.

“ And I want to give you an assurance that the issue of criminal gangs and goons is going to end,” Lagat stated.

He added that the government had issued a directive requiring security agencies to intensify efforts against gangs and support programmes designed to eliminate goonism.

Despite the public outcry, Lagat pushed back on claims that goons and criminal gangs have taken over the country , terming such assertions misleading and maintained that statistics available to the police show that only a small number of individuals are actually behind the reported criminal activity.
