The National Police Service has confirmed that legal action is underway against a driver who was caught on video physically manhandling a traffic cop.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a statement released on Sunday, May 17, the service said the motorist, who was captured on video confronting and assaulting the officer, has already been identified, with authorities moving to ensure due process is followed.

The National Police Service (NPS) strongly condemns a video circulating widely on social media, showing a motorist confronting and physically assaulting a traffic police officer on duty in the Embakasi area. The motorist has been identified, and due process is underway," a statement from the NPS read.

While describing the attack as a serious violation of the rule of law, NPS warned that any form of violence against police officers undermined public order and the integrity of law enforcement operations.

📌 What You Need to Know

The incident in question went viral on social media a day earlier, showing what appeared to be a physical confrontation between a motorist and a traffic police officer.

In the video, the civilian is seen with his hands on the traffic officer, who initially exercised restraint, presumably because he was overpowered by the irate man in the Embakasi area.

As the situation escalated, two other officers intervened to calm tensions, with the civilian behind the physical altercation briefly subdued. The cause of the altercation remains unclear.

Besides the Embakasi incident, the NPS also condemned a separate incident in Lang'ata where a Metro Shuttle bus crew allegedly arrested a traffic officer who was enforcing traffic regulations. According to police, all suspects have been arrested and the vehicle in question has been impounded.

Separately, NPS also flagged a third assault case in Mwiki, Kasarani, where a woman was set on fire after an attack involving petrol. The victim is currently fighting for her life at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

Preliminary reports suggest the Mwiki attack could be linked to political disagreements, with the case being taken over by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
