A matatu driver accused of causing a deadly crash along Enterprise Road in Nairobi's Industrial Area while allegedly performing dangerous 'manyoka' stunts has been arrested in Malindi after two months on the run.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The driver, who is accused of being behind the wheel of the matatu when it overturned on June 4 this year, is expected to be arraigned in court and charged over the deaths of four passengers.
The crash occurred at night as the 32-seater matatu was travelling from Nairobi's Central Business District towards Komarock.
Witnesses said the vehicle was being driven recklessly moments before the crash, with some passengers allegedly hanging outside as the driver made dangerous swerving manoeuvres commonly known as “manyoka” or “nyoka nyoka.”
📌 What You Need to Know
The vehicle eventually lost control and overturned along the busy Enterprise Road, triggering a major rescue operation involving members of the public and emergency responders.
Several passengers were injured in the crash, with survivors later recounting terrifying moments before the matatu overturned.
Some survivors alleged that the driver was performing dangerous manoeuvres shortly before the accident.
The driver survived the crash and was also injured, but was later reported to have gone on the run as families of those killed began demanding justice.
Families of the victims subsequently called for the driver to be held accountable, saying they wanted justice for their relatives who lost their lives in the crash.
The arrest comes about two months after the Enterprise Road incident, with the driver reportedly traced and arrested in Malindi on Wednesday, September 16.
