Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has thrown her weight behind Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua as the opposition's preferred presidential flagbearer, challenging other coalition principals eyeing the 2027 ticket to match his political credentials.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

Speaking after a church service in Kirinyaga on Sunday, Maina said Gachagua had already demonstrated his ability to mobilise votes and protect the opposition's interests, unlike other leaders seeking the coalition's presidential ticket.

"There are some men, you know; we have other co-principals eyeing the flagbearer post. It is only Riggy G who has demonstrated that he can produce votes, protect, and ensure that Kasongo goes home," she said.

Although Maina did not mention any leader by name, her remarks appeared directed at senior opposition figures who have either declared or are widely seen as interested in leading the coalition into the 2027 General Election.

📌 What You Need to Know

Among those linked to the race are Gachagua , Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, all of whom have either openly expressed interest in the presidency or have been fronted by their supporters.

Maina went on to express confidence that Gachagua would ultimately secure both the opposition ticket and the presidency.

"I want to say that Gachagua will be the sixth president of Kenya and we, as his army we are ready," she told the public rally.

Her remarks come as competition within the opposition continues to intensify, with coalition leaders expected to eventually settle on a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

For his part, Gachagua has repeatedly maintained that he is the opposition leader best placed to send President Ruto home , arguing that his political influence, particularly in the Mt Kenya region, gives him an edge over his rivals despite his impeachment from office.

During the earlier church service, the former DP claimed that several political leaders allied to Ruto from the Mt Kenya region had reached out seeking reconciliation talks with him.
