Residents of Nyayo Estate in Embakasi East, Nairobi, have taken to the streets to protest the alleged grabbing of seven acres of public land at Plot 115, accusing private developers of taking over a parcel they say was reserved for community use.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
The protest, organised by the Nyayo Embakasi Residents Association (NERA), began at Malaika Park before proceeding through parts of the estate, with residents demanding that the disputed parcel be protected from further development.
NERA had notified Embakasi Police Station of the planned demonstration on August 10, stating that the march would run from 10am to 2pm along Malaika Park, Fedha Road, Jabali Avenue, and Dhahabu Avenue.
The residents have also called for the preservation of public spaces within the estate, including land set aside for recreational and community facilities.
📌 What You Need to Know
The latest protest follows another demonstration held on August 7, when Nyayo Estate residents took to the streets over what they described as the grabbing of public land previously intended for a primary school.
Several residents were arrested during that demonstration before being released, according to the residents' association.
The residents claim the perimeter wall around the disputed parcel was demolished nearly two years ago, with construction activities recently resuming on the land.
They further allege that attempts by residents to access the property and establish what was being built were unsuccessful after they were denied entry to the site.
The residents are now demanding that the demolished perimeter wall be restored, construction stopped, and adequate security provided around the disputed property, as the ownership and intended use of the land are contested.
The dispute has previously drawn the attention of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, who has backed the residents and accused the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) of being involved in the alleged sale and allocation of public utility land in Nyayo Estate and neighbouring Tassia.
