The State Department for Children Services has refuted claims that cash transfers for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) will be delayed for the month of June.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

In a notice, the department has distanced itself from a press release circulating online, cautioning members of the public against relying on unverified information about the Cash Transfer for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (CT-OVC) programme.

The disputed statement, purportedly signed by Children Services Principal Secretary Carren Agengo, alleged that payments had been held up due to a backlog in beneficiary verification and recertification.

Consequently, the fake statement stated that disbursements would only be made after the process of verifying and updating beneficiary records was completed.

📌 What You Need to Know

The Department’s clarification comes amid growing concern among beneficiaries following reports that the government has yet to announce a new payment date for the next CT-OVC cycle.

The uncertainty has been fueled by the fact that while the government released Ksh2.4 billion on June 5 for social protection programmes targeting older persons and persons with severe disabilities, OVC beneficiaries have not yet received a corresponding disbursement.

Beneficiaries online claim that the last completed payment under the CT-OVC programme was processed on March 31, as widespread discussion on the status of the programme continues.

The department’s move to dismiss the circulating statement comes against the backdrop of broader concerns over delayed payments in parts of the public sector.

Workers and beneficiaries in several government offices and programmes have reported delays in salaries, stipends and other payments.

Recent complaints have emerged from county employees, interns, teachers and healthcare workers over delayed payments, placing increased scrutiny on government disbursement timelines.
