More than 800 days after Rex Kanyike Masai was shot dead during the Gen Z protests in Nairobi, police officers have yet to record statements about the incident, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has told a court.

🇰🇪 Breaking It Down

IPOA raised the issue on Thursday, September 3, during the inquest into Masai’s death at the Milimani Law Courts.

The authority said officers from Parliament, KICC, Kamukunji and Kilimani police stations had failed to comply with a court order requiring them to record statements.

“You gave an order that police officers at Parliament Police Station, KICC Police Station, Kamukunji Police Station and Kilimani Police Station record statements,” IPOA lawyer David Tenge told the court.

“Until now the summons has not been honoured. Let them come and record statements with IPOA so that we take their witness accounts,” he added.

International Justice Mission lawyer Manasses Mwangi also told the court that no police officer from the affected stations had recorded a statement.

The National Police Service said some officers responsible for keeping records at the stations had since been transferred or left the service.

“We are in the process of collating records, but we realised it will take longer,” NPS lawyer Antony Mwangi said.

The court also heard that officers from Kilimani Police Station had been checked and none appeared to have been deployed to Nairobi's Central Business District when Masai was killed.

Masai, 29, was shot at about 7pm on June 20, 2024, along Moi Avenue in Nairobi's CBD during protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
