The National Heroes Council (NHC) has nominated the late former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, among the 242 Kenyans proposed for national hero status in 2026, alongside independence-era freedom fighter Pio Gama Pinto.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
From a document obtained by Kenyans.co.ke on September 2, Odinga has been honoured posthumously for his role as a statesman, patriot and constitutional reformer who shaped Kenya's democratic journey.
The Council specifically cited his contribution to the struggle for multiparty democracy in the 1990s, a fight that helped dismantle one-party dominance and widen political freedoms.
He also served as Kenya's Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013, a period during which he championed reforms that culminated in the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution.
📌 What You Need to Know
On the other hand, the late Pio Gama Pinto, a journalist and socialist thinker of Goan-Kenyan heritage, has been recognised for his role in Kenya's liberation struggle and in advancing social justice.
The Council noted that Pinto used journalism as a tool for political mobilization, championing workers' rights and anti-colonial resistance decades before his assassination in 1965, and he will also be honored posthumously.
The former Governor for Bomet County and a prominent politician, Dr Joyce Laboso, will also be included in the list for good governance, transformative development, and advocacy for devolution.
Other prominent names on the list include former Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed, ex-Attorney General Githu Muigai, and Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Governor Kamau Thugge, all honoured for their service in governance and public institutions.
The former Senate Speaker and the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) Chairman, Ekwee Ethuro, is also part of the group, recognised for governance, devolution, peacebuilding, and advocacy for marginalised communities.
Beyond politics, the roll recognises achievers across education, scholarship, sports, arts, peacebuilding, and environmental conservation, among other fields.
