The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has announced that its students will soon be eligible to apply for funding from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), marking a major shift in government support for medical trainees.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 24, KMTC said the development follows an assurance by President William Ruto during an address at State House on June 23 that students at the institution would be incorporated into the Higher Education Financing programme.
According to the college, applications will begin once HELB releases the funds and formally advertises the opening of its application portal.
“KMTC students are now eligible to apply for HELB funding,” President Ruto said, noting that learners at the institution deserve the same access to government financial support as students in other institutions of higher learning.
📌 What You Need to Know
The latest announcement provides further clarity on a commitment the President first made in April when he directed the Ministry of Education to ensure KMTC students were included in the country's new tertiary education funding framework.
At the time, Ruto instructed Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba to ensure students at the medical college benefited from government support beginning with the next academic semester.
The move is expected to bring relief to thousands of students who have long struggled to finance their studies due to limited access to structured government funding programmes.
KMTC noted that the government’s decision is aimed at expanding access to education and training opportunities for young Kenyans pursuing careers in the health sector.
The President also noted the government's commitment to increasing funding for learning institutions while broadening access to financial aid for students undertaking higher education and technical training programmes.
For years, KMTC students have largely relied on a revolving fund arrangement , unlike university students who have traditionally accessed loans and scholarships through HELB.
