Residents of Kuresoi North have stormed the Nakuru Central Police Station, demanding the release of MP Alfred Mutai.
🇰🇪 Breaking It Down
Footage obtained by Kenyans.co.ke shows hundreds of residents being blocked by police officers from accessing the police premises.
The crowd is seen chanting and protesting outside the premises, with some demonstrators holding placards and twigs as they call for the MP’s release.
One of the key reasons for the protests is that they claim law enforcement officers are trying to hold the MP for a long time to delay the court process, as one protester stated.
📌 What You Need to Know
"What these people are trying to do, is to hold our MP for long in that cell so that they can delay the court so that when we pay bail, he will be denied bond, our MP can spend another night behind bars," stated one of the protesters.
They are stressing that this is the only ultimatum they have, for their MP to be taken to court, rather than spending more days behind bars.
Further images obtained through sources close to the MP show him in an altercation with the police officers of the Nakuru Police Station, with him clearly being heard stating that he does not want to be put in a private cell, but inside one with other inmates.
Mutai was detained at Nakuru Central Police Station on Monday night, moments after presenting himself to detectives investigating violent clashes that disrupted a youth empowerment programme in Kuresoi North last week.
The legislator surrendered to officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) after days of being sought by police over the chaos that left three people nursing gunshot injuries during the event attended by leaders allied to Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika.
His detention came four days after the National Police Service (NPS) named him as the prime suspect in the violence and urged him to surrender to assist investigators.
